Day 27 walking. Under 200km to Santiago 18 May

That means we have walked over 600km. Woohooooo. Who would have thought. Not only have we walked over 600km but we have done it carrying our possessions on our backs. Amazing.

Likelihood of rain today so wet weather preparations ready. We have learnt. Wore waterproof coats. Had waterproof cover on my pack already. Have a zip-lock bag ready for the ipad as well as a plastic shopping bag for the document carry bag. Can wrap important things in a blink but could have done with an extra layer. It was COLD.

Leisurely getaway this morning, thinking we might stop in Ponferrada, which has a stunning Templar castle built in twelfth century. It is impressive. Too early for opening times, so we walked around, and walked on. Past the Saturday markets and continued following the shells and arrows of the camino.

Bit early or we would have visited this place for you Carolyn. We had already had breakfast.

.mmm not quote the same.

Loved this tree and all the iron root-like structures created to support it. Amazing. What's tree and what is not?

Because its Zac's birthday (Feliz cumpleaños to our Peruvian son), we treated ourselves to a night in a hotel. Special day deserves special treats.... Long soak in a hot bath, towels, bed for two, dinner of arroz con pulpo, habas con chorizo and cerdo, huevo y papas fritas and crema de queso con fraises. Would that suit you Zac. All with vino tinto and followed with orujo de hierbas. We enjoyed it.... And only 20€.

Notes to self
  • 20km  Molinaseca to Cacabelos
  • Hotel villa de Cacabelos 52€ for double room including buffet breakfast served from 6.30am. At last
  • I like pulpo. Want to try it char grilled. Where.
  • Less than 200kms to Santiago. Some steep climbs still to come. And steep descents. Even worse.
  • Bring a pillow slip when walking the camino. But pillow slips are not like Aust ones. Pillows here are as wide as the bed, and narrower. One on our double bed is also as wide as the bed. Pillow slips are open ended, and several inches longer than pillows. Don't think I would like to put slips on double bed pillows.
