Day 21 walking. Flowers for Mother's Day 12 May

Leaving Sahagún

Had to make a big decision last night. How many days to Léon... 3 easy days or 2 long days. Decided to put in a big one today and see if we could manage to follow up with a slightly smaller one the following day. So far so good. We did the 31.5km to Reliegos. Woohoo.

Even had time today to appreciate the flowers all around us. What a gift for Mother's Day, on top of messages from our children. GOLD!

Talking about Mother's Day. I've been very blessed and received good wishes two weeks in a row. Apparently it was Mother's Day here last Sunday. Milka had that worked out. But I had been looking out for special Mother's Day event, similar to what Lou and I experienced in Aguas Calientes some years back. Nothing. Not even a special church service that we noticed. To be honest most of the villages we pass through are extremely small 30-60 residents, although from the buildings you'd think it was more populated than that. I think many are empty.

Today we were on the flattest countryside we have seen yet. Guess this is the Meseta.

It felt so much like 'big sky country' we see around the Central Highlands in Queensland.... in good times. It was very green. And we didn't find it at all boring. The day started with totally clear skies, then turned to full cloud as we had breakfast after 13 km. We walked most of the day under cloud cover, before the clouds evaporated early afternoon. It was really comfortable walking in warm sunshine but with a cool breeze. Amazing, but not at all what we had expected from our previous research. I guess we have been lucky.

Gotta love bars who put tables out in the narrow street. Works.  Certainly got our attention. The few cars here just go round. Can't see it working back home. Haha

We enjoyed a make-shift picnic. Just love olives here in Spain. Simply delicious. But you can have the bags of nuts!!! I have really made some bad choices with those..... lots of sunflower seeds in shells, roasted I think. Not so good when they make up 60% of the packet. Another 20% was roasted corn. Oh well, the olives were fantastic.

Staying the night in the first Albergue we came to in this village. Actually it's a little outside the village, but we were ready to stop.... Very flash place, 6 beds in each room. Beds not bunks. That's a real treat, and all have fresh coloured bottom sheet and pillowcase. Bathrooms are really clean and new. But somehow it lacks the atmosphere of communal spaces. All bedroom doors are shut and no idea who else is staying here.

Reminds me of years back when we brought Sophie and Zac back from sleeping at Gma's (together on the floor), put them in their own beds in their own rooms, but Zac couldn't settle. We had to put him in bed with Sophie. Just a different camino experience.

Notes to self.
  • 31.5km Sahagun to Reliegos
  • Albergue Piedras Blancas. 9€ and dinner 10€ each
  • Single beds (not bunks) luxury, and only 6 to a room. Was a little worried that our elderly room mate, who spent all afternoon after arriving, in bed, no dinner, and all night in bed.... May not wake up. Have heard of it happening on this trip already. Not a problem. All good
  • Have a new camino friend, and a contact for Budapest. Fantastic. We met him at dinner, and found out lots of information about things to try in Budapest. I have a list of food (all written down so I don't have to rely on my memory) and drinks, which also come with a warning. Be careful, it is very strong! Look forward to catching up with him in Budapest, not sure that we will see much of him after today as he walks much faster than we do. Great night.
