Day 17 walking. Itero de la Vega 8 May

I thought we were on the Meseta, but not yet. Still more hills, one steep one in particular. Whoaaa
But the sight of the day was.....

We have seen this pair way back near Pamplona. How would Tiny have gone on this trek? Would probably have had to carry her. This poor dog was wearing two leather shoes. Tracks are fairly rough in some places. Good to see he was being well taken care of, and not hustled along. Just making the same sort of pace as us. And such a good dog. Beautiful partnership.

Only walked 20kms today and have opted for a 'habitacion con baño' for 35€. Was great to have a shower, and be able to dry your feet properly afterwards. Lex appreciated being able to dry his back - a standard towel. Woohoo. Makes you really appreciate the simple things in life.

Today there was a huge steep climb. Once we go to the top, it was only a short way across, about 300 or 400m, then steep downhill. Unbelievable!! Was there not another way... Possibly going around the base.

We could see the track snaking away in the distance.... Up the hill
And it just went on and on. Apparently it was a 12% incline and went for just over 1km.

Felt like it too!!!!!!
View from the top was spectacular, but so short, before we started an even steeper descent. Lucky it was concrete on the steepest part. We have developed a 'Cliffy Young shuffle' on the downhill slopes. Think it's a bit easier on the knees. Only works when we are feeling ok.

We could see that the road ahead stretched far out across the valley. Looked really impressive, we walked right across, and further to the next village.

Notes to self
  • 20km Hontannas to Itero de la Vega
  • Hostal Vitero  Private room for 35€ is good idea occasionally. Bit musty smelling, but sheets, good showers and towels are a real treat.
  • Feel like I might be getting a cold. Oh no. Thanks to those who share their germs in albergues!
