So much to see in Madrid.

Last few days we have followed some of the city's walking tours from an ipad app. Lots to see and we do get side tracked. The greatest impression is that things in Madrid are BIG! Not skyscraper big. Most of this part of the city is centuries old, and nothing appears to be over 10 stories, but grand!! massive buildings, and gigantic statues and adornments on rooftops. Huge!!

Yesterday we came across San Miguel Mercado - more like a food, wine and tapas market. Enjoyed a few tasty treats.

Impressive sights from today's walk were

  • This amazing vertical garden. Covered the entire side of a building. Stunning.
  • Retiro Park is massive. Looked for a few geocaches here, but didn't find them- too many people around.
  • Love the rose garden. Gma would have loved this too.
  • Spent quite a bit of time in a museum. Saw a couple of school groups there too. Prep age. How amazing would that be to take a group to an art museum, sit down in front of a huge painting, and talk about it.

Art galleries. We visited a couple - one from masters. Amazing, but something new for me was some framed wax reliefs. 3D effect reminded me of your textile work Sophie. So intricate. Picture doesn't capture it.

The other gallery we visited was quite out there. Huge displays. This one featured an American teepee made of 6,000 bank notes from American countries, erected over 3 tons of bones, and installed in the centre of a circle made of 69,300 candles. Mmmmm I'm sure it makes a statement.

Tonight we ate at the Bazaar Restaurant. Not far from our place. Another find from our Madrid Tours app. Great food. Best red meat I have had in Spain! Lex enjoyed his baked tuna with mango chutney. We ate well!

Should have taken this pic before we ate most of the meal, but it was soooo good

Not sure when people sleep here. It is daylight until almost 10pm. People don't seem to eat until after 9 pm at least. Our street is busy all night. There are soooo many bars, cafeterias, restaurants, EVERYWHERE! Shops open around 10am, close for siesta between 2 and 5pm, and reopen between 5 and 9pm. Even construction work seems to function in those hours. So different from our lifestyle. Or mine anyway. ;-).
